On a mission

The Humpback whales definitely made it rain today, with an abundance of water sprays on their northern migration to tropical warmer waters. We were all delighted to see a total of 12 Humpback whales! Little behavioural activity was seen between pods today as the whales were on a mission to travel as fast as they could. On their annual migration, Humpback whales travel at a speed of 4-5 knots, to effectively conserve their energy for the long 16,000 kilometre return journey. Today we watched a few deep water dives as the whales extended their tail fluke into the air before diving into the deep blue. Humpback whales are incredible as they can dive down to 210 metres and hold their breath for up to 30 minutes! The weather definitely complimented the whale watch today with plenty of sunshine over the glassy waters off Cape Moreton.
