23 Humpback Whales and Some more!

Today’s whale watch was phenomenal, I have never felt so surrounded by humpbacks! Today we interacted with 23 individuals, however I can guarantee there was at least another 30 splashing around on the horizon. The positive effects of humpback conservation are becoming increasingly apparent, and it is so humbling for me to be able to be part of the ecstasy of the guests who come from all corners of the globe to come and witness these spectacular animals.

The day started off with multiple large pods of dolphins between Comboyuro Point and North Point, tracking east toward the humpback grounds. We followed the dolphin trail to 4 pods of humpbacks charging toward a tail slapping individual in the background. It felt as though we were part of the party converging with these pods just out from the cape. When we arrived, it soon became obvious that we were witnessing competitive groups, charging toward a lone female. Male humpbacks are renowned for the chase that they give for their shot at affection, and it always amazes me how fast these nearly 50 tonne animals can swim. As smaller individuals gassed out and dropped off, further pods were brought in by the commotion and gave chase. These chases have been known to go on for many hours so unfortunately it was time to depart home before seeing the winner of this interaction. It was so cool to see wild humpback behaviours though in their essence, and on top of this pods of playful dolphins among the picturesque Moreton Island backdrop.

These humpbacks are incredible animals and it is vital that we do everything we can to conserve their beauty and grace for further generations to enjoy.
