Sex:
Male
Birth Date: Fred is an old dolphin and has lots of light pigmentation
scar tissue around the tip if his dorsal fin. Fred
may have been born pre 1970 and has very flat and missing
teeth also indicating his old age.
Position in Pod: Fred is a large male
inshore bottlenose dolphin that is fully grown (3 meters
long, weighing 200+ kg). As far as we can see Fred is the
dominant male of the group.
History: Fred came into the dolphin feed area 20th May 1993
with a large shark bite on his left dorsal side, extending
2cm from his left eye almost to his dorsal fin. The wound
was around 45cm wide and between 6-8cm at the deepest point
of the laceration.
Fred showed amazing behaviour in that he appeared oblivious
to even having such an unimaginable injury. During this
healing time ~ about 4-6 weeks, Fred demonstrated incredible
healing ability and maintained his natural feeding behaviour.
Dr. Peter Corkeron’s studies on bottlenose dolphins in the
central bay indicate that about 1/3 of the dolphins in the
bay have physical evidence of shark encounters. After all,
they both eat fish and sometimes compete for the same food
source.
ID Features: Fred's dorsal fin is quite light in colour. He
has lots of old scars on his body and is larger than all
of the other dolphins. The end of Fred's rostrum is also
quite pitted and rough.
Personality/traits:
Fred is the most placid of all the dolphins that attend the
program and its interesting to note that Fred stays back when
all the other dolphins squabble. It is only on rare occasions
that Freddy becomes involved in disputes amongst the ‘youngsters’.
