What is it?
The Tangalooma Mobile Marine Education Centre (MMEC) is a totally FREE educational program that is offered to primary and secondary schools in South East Queensland. Our aim is to teach students about Marine Mammals and the conservation of Moreton Bay and the general Marine Environment. We achieve this by providing an entertaining and interactive lecture and presentation at your school by our qualified marine scientists.
As Marine Biologists at the Tangalooma Marine Education and Conservation Centre, we have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most amazing marine creatures in the world, including dolphins, whales, dugongs, turtles and much more. Our staff have a very ‘hands on’ approach and unfortunately witness a great deal of unnecessary casualties within the marine environment. There are just too many marine creatures in South East Queensland that are harmed needlessly by various forms of pollution that can easily be addressed.
The future of our oceans lies in their hands!
We feel it is an important duty to provide this free program to educate the next generation on important marine related issues, after all, the future of our oceans lies in their hands.
For this reason, it is essential to educate our youth on conservation and its associated issues.
To do so we must motivate the students and encourage them to be interested in, or even start working towards, the creation of a healthier marine environment.
Education from a different point of view
By taking a marine biologist from the field into the classroom, it makes it all the more exciting and interesting for students, and can motivate students into making a difference.
What we need from schools
Our Staff of Marine Scientists will come to your school and provide a power point presentation on Marine Mammals, covering topics such as: what are they, how they live, how they survive in Moreton Bay right next to a major city and what we need to do to ensure their conservation.
To do this we will require approx 1-1.5hrs , made up of a 1 hour PowerPoint presentation followed by 30 minutes of forum time when we will field questions, answers and discuss ideas.
We will require a screen to project on and a facility for the actual lecture to take place.
We will bring a video projector if needed, lap top, teaching aides like bones, teeth, photographs, dolphin's brain, etc'
