You can help save the marine environment by being aware of the following points:
REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE:
Items such as plastic bags, tin cans, aluminium cans etc, take many years to break down, it is extremely important to always try to Reuse, Recycle andReduce as many wastes as you can. Remember you can also REFUSE to take a plastic bag to carry your groceries.
BUY ONLY DOLPHIN SAFE TUNA:
Thousands of dolphins are still being killed ever year worldwide because they get caught up in tuna fishing nets.Buy only 'dolphin safe' tuna from reputable companies.
PLASTIC BAGS:
Plastic bags floating around our worlds' oceans look like sea jellies, unfortunately lots of marine creatures love to eat sea jellies. When a plastic bag is consumed by an animal it becomes lodged in its digestive system. As a result gas will build up inside of its digestive system not allowing the animal to digest its food properly. As a result of this the animal will simply starve to death. SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS and use reusable material bags when you go shopping.
RUBBISH:
Plastic bags, paper bags, drink bottles, cigarette butts etc are often disposed of incorrectly and end up in our water drains, which then wash down Brisbane waterways and end up in Moreton Bay. Please dispose of your rubbish using bins provided or take with you. Bins overflowing in parks can sometimes encourage birds to feed from the bins, and they can make quite a mess! So at the end of the day when everyone goes home with a smile thinking they have put their rubbish in the bin, the birds have made a mess! So if the bin is full, please take your rubbish with you and dispose of accordingly.
Perhaps once a week or even once a month, take bag, go for a walk in your local area and pick up some rubbish. We don't have to wait for clean up Australia day, if we all make an effort, it will make a big difference!
BE CAREFUL OF WHAT GOES DOWN THE KITCHEN SINK!:
Don't put oils, fats or harmful chemicals down the drain - they will eventually end up in rivers, lakes and oceans and harm our water quality and wildlife.
BE RESPONSIBLE WHEN YOU GOFISHING:
Thousand of marine creatures are killed every day due to irresponsible fishing practices. ALWAYS throw your discarded fishing line and fishing hooks in the bin.NEVER throw them in the oceans as sea creatures become entangled in the fishing line and hooks and theywill die a very slow and painful death. Please use metal fishing hooks that will rust away quickly, stainless steel hooks DO NOT break down quickly and can cause a lot of harm to the animals hooked.
