What is the Mobile Marine Education Centre? The Tangalooma Mobile Marine Education Centre (MMEC) is a totally free educational program that is offered to primary and secondary schools throughout South East Queensland. Our aim is to teach students about marine mammals and the conservation of the marine environment while also providing an engaging, interactive and highly visual presentation.
What do the presentations involve? One of our biologists will come fully prepared for a 1-2 hour interactive presentation. Based around a highly visual, colourful slideshow screening, we will also bring our special box of hands-on goodies, including animal bones, photos and the students' perpetual favourite, the dolphin brain! Depending on the age of the students, our initial presentation will go for anywhere between 45-90 minutes, leaving the best part till last - the student question time. We find this is one of the most entertaining parts of the day, enabling students to pick the brain of an actual biologist!
The future of our oceans lies in their hands! As Marine Biologists at the Tangalooma Marine Education and Conservation Centre, we have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most amazing marine creatures in the world, including dolphins, whales, dugongs and turtles. Our staff have a very 'hands on' approach and unfortunately witness a great deal of unnecessary casualties within the marine environment.
We feel that is our duty to share our passion for this environment and educate the younger generation about not only the remarkable diversity of marine life we have here, but the issues many of these animals face and its conservation as a whole. It is our hope that through presenting this information in a fun, interactive manner, we may inspire many students to become equally passionate about preserving the oceans.
