As the sun sets across the the bay, a pod of inshore bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) start to make their way in to the crystal clear shores of Moreton Island. As the golden glow of the sun disappears behind the mountains lining the horizon, the dolphins begin to hunt, play and socialise right beneath the jetty.
In 1992 the first dolphin made herself known to the Tangalooma staff and guests. Bringing in two precious calves close by her side, Beauty was rarely seen far from her offspring Bobo and Tinkerbell. Later during the program a 3rd calf was born, Shadow. Tinkerbell and her little sister Shadow have now become mothers themselves and frequently arrive to Tangalooma with Tangles, Storm, Phoenix, Silhouette and the latest addition, Zephyr.
By late 1992, Beauty was joined by another mature female, Bess, and an elderly male, Fred (often nicknamed "Blind Freddy"). Over the following years Bess became the mother of two very mischievious males, Rani and Nari. Rani soon gained a playmate when an orphaned dolphin called Echo arrived at Tangalooma. Hungry and lonely, Echo was adopted by the Tangalooma dolphins and over the years grew into a strong and healthy male who is rarely seen apart from his partners in crime Nari and Rani.
