Position in Pod:Mother of Tinkerbell and Shadow, and possibly Bobo.
History:Beauty was the first dolphin to hand feed at
Tangalooma, and was doing so on a nightly basis by 1992. Most of the
dolphins that now visit the program are her descendants. Unfortunately, Beauty developed an infection on
her beak (rostrum) in mid 1995, which SeaWorld veterinarians suggested
was most likely caused by a tooth root abscess or a penetrating
wound resulting from an imbedded fish spine. Although closely monitored,
Beauty became noticeably weaker, and was last seen on 22nd December,
1995. When her most recent calf Shadow arrived at the feed without her
mum, Tangalooma staff assumed the worst.
ID Features: As her name suggests, she was a beautiful dolphin, sleek and a very light shade of grey. Like her two daughters, her dorsal fin was perfectly curved, just like a cresting wave.
Personality traits:Beauty had a very gentle and placid nature and was a very caring mother to her calves. Beauty had a natural curiosity towards people and her trusting nature led to her interacting with humans and eventually accepting food from us. She will remain in our thoughts and memories forever.
