Sex: Female Birth Date: We aren't sure of Bess' exact age, but was estimated to be between 30-40 years old. Position in Pod: Mother of Rani and Nari, now deceased. Bess used to feed in Lane 3 next to Shadow. History: Bess joined the feeding program shortly after Beauty and her two calves, Tinkerbell and Bobo. First hand feeding in 1993, Bess blessed us with two beautiful boys, Rani and Nari. Rani was just a small calf when Bess first arrived in 1992, and Nari wasn't far behind, first arriving on the scene in 1997. Sadly, Bess died in 2000, and while we can never be certain, assume it was simply due to old age. Both Rani and Nari still visit Tangalooma today. ID Features: Bess was quite easily recognised by her uniquely shaped dorsal fin. The trailing edge (back edge) of her fin was very corrugated. Quite a large dolphin, her size and dark shade also made Bess easy to identify. Personality/traits: Bess was a very cautious mother and although she brought Nari in at only 2 days of age, she would often keep her calves out in the deeper water. A placid old girl, Bess would never get involved in confrontations with the other dolphins. When Shadow's mother Beauty passed away, she began to feed alongside Bess. |
