About the Tangalooma Island Resort Boats

Tangalooma Island Resort currently has 3 catamarans transporting guests across to the resort from Brisbane, and 1 large landing barge used to transport food and supplies over to the resort.

Tangalooma Jet

At 40 metres in length, the Jet is the largest boat in Tangalooma’s fleet, carrying up to 340 passengers to Moreton Island in unsurpassed speed and comfort. Built in Cairns in 1991, a 16 day voyage from Japan via Saipan and New Ireland saw the arrival of the $1 million wave piercing catamaran in Brisbane in July 2001. It now features new Cummins engines and Rolls Royce water jets as of 2014.

Tangalooma Flyer

Built in 1982 with a capacity of up to 180 passengers, the Flyer was Tangalooma’s first catamaran. After many years of service it has carried more than 3.5 million passengers across Moreton Bay. During this time, it has travelled 900,000 nautical miles – equivalent to 1.6 million kilometres, or 38 laps of the equator. In November 2005, the Flyer underwent a four-month refit worth about $900,000.

Tangalooma Express

With a capacity of 90 passengers, the Express covers a distance of over 1000 nautical miles, or 1800 kilometres per week. Built in Brisbane, the Express was launched in September 2004 at a cost of about $2 million.

Rainbow Venture

Tangalooma Island Resort’s Rainbow Venture barge is used to supply just about the whole resort, from food and drinks to rubbish and machinery. Serving a different purpose to the people transferring catamarans which take 75 minutes, the barge takes 3.5 hours to get from Brisbane to Tangalooma.
