Tangalooma Island Resort Announces Expansion Plans for World-Class Snorkel Destination in Partnership with Queensland Government

Eagle Farm, Queensland, Australia - 1st April 2024 - Tangalooma Island Resort today announced it is in high-level discussions with the Queensland Government about a significant expansion of the existing Tangalooma Wrecks, a world-renowned snorkel and dive location. The ambitious project aims to scuttle five additional ships at the Moreton Island site between 2025 and 2030, creating a larger and more diverse underwater recreation zone for snorkelers, particularly in anticipation of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

The expansion plans come after the Queensland Maritime Protection Association (QMPA) approached Tangalooma Island Resort regarding the "Arrow", one of  Queensland's last remaining coal-fired steam tugboats. Due to limitations in finding a permanent exhibition space, the "Arrow" has been earmarked as the first vessel to be scuttled under the new initiative.

“The Tangalooma Wrecks are already a major drawcard for tourists visiting Moreton Island,” said Wally Coyne, spokesperson for Tangalooma Island Resort. “By strategically adding these new shipwrecks, we can create an even more spectacular underwater attraction, offering snorkelers of all experience levels a unique opportunity to explore a diverse marine environment.”

Environmental Responsibility at the Forefront

Coyne emphasized the resort's commitment to environmental responsibility throughout the project. "We've commissioned thorough environmental impact assessments to ensure the expansion is conducted sustainably," he explained. "Initial indications are positive, suggesting the vessels will be strategically positioned on the western flank of the existing structures, aligning with the existing aesthetic to create a cohesive underwater experience; whilst shoring up the breakwater protections the wrecks provide boats sheltering from westerly winds."

Expected Benefits

The expansion is expected to deliver significant benefits to the region, including:

  • Boosting tourism: The enhanced Tangalooma Wrecks will attract more visitors to Moreton Island and Queensland, generating economic growth and supporting local businesses.

  • Creating a world-class snorkel destination: The carefully selected and positioned wrecks will provide snorkelers with an exceptional underwater experience, rivaling the best in the world.

  • Promoting marine conservation: The scuttled vessels will create an artificial reef, fostering the growth of marine life and promoting biodiversity in the area.

“We are confident that this project aligns perfectly with the Queensland Government's vision for promoting sustainable tourism and showcasing the natural wonders of our state,” Coyne concluded. “We are committed to working collaboratively with the government and the QMMA to ensure the success of this exciting initiative.”

A Boost for Australian Tourism

Artie Langer, Director of Tangasplash, one of Australia's largest snorkelling tour operators, echoed Tangalooma's enthusiasm. "This expansion is fantastic news for the Australian tourism industry," Langer said. "The Tangalooma Wrecks are already a must-see for snorkelers visiting Queensland, and this project will only elevate its status. We can expect to see increased interest from both domestic and international tourists, eager to explore this one-of-a-kind underwater wonderland."
