Tangalooma Eco Rangers make 44 Wildlife Rescues in 2023

Tangalooma is very fortunate to experience an abundance of native wildlife right on its doorstep, and our Eco Centre and Eco Rangers love to educate guests on the importance of conservation and the protection of this natural wildlife.

The Tangalooma Eco Centre not only runs our daily dolphin feeding program, but they also assist National Parks in the rescue of wildlife found on Moreton Island and surrounds. In 2023, The Tangalooma Eco Centre completed a total of 44 rescues, and whilst not every rescue is successful due to the nature of the injury, there have been fantastic and rewarding releases.

Among these successful rescues, the Eco Rangers released many bush stone curlews after finding them injured, a green-sea turtle, forest kingfishers, a sand monitor, and even a seal, that was collected by SeaWorld for further rehabilitation.

The Tangalooma Eco Centre plays an important role in the protection, rescue and rehabilitation of all creatures great and small across the land and waters of Moreton Island (Mulgumpin)

In some circumstances, an animal must be kept in care until they are healthy or old enough to be released. In February of 2023, a baby sugar glider was found in Kooringal, a coastal town on the south-west coast of Moreton Island, after falling out of a tree and suffering an eye injury. The Eco Centre organised care for the baby with RSPCA until June 2023, and when it became old enough to survive by itself, it was returned to Tangalooma and then soft released back in the same area it was found.
