Halfway through Humpback whale migration in 2019

As we pass the halfway point of this year’s whale watching season here at Tangalooma, one thing is clear – it is definitely shaping up to be one of the most exciting whale watching seasons yet!

The first half of the whale watching season has been jam-packed with action as the whales make their way up the Humpback Highway with Moreton Bay taking centre stage for all the action thus far.

In the last month, the Tangalooma Eco Rangers, along with excited whale watchers, spotted upwards of 30 whales in one day alone! These large numbers of migrating whales are indicative of the increasing humpback population, which not so long ago was on the brink of extinction.

Check out some of the whale action from August 2019:

Each day whale watchers continue to be treated to numerous sightings of these stunning humpback whales as they make their annual migration from the Antarctic. Despite their size, the active humpbacks seem to enjoy showing off their acrobatic displays including pec slaps, breaches and tail slaps for delighted visitors as they excitedly try to capture these majestic animals in action. The challenge of the season has now become the best “whelfie” (otherwise known as the “whale selfie”) as the curious whales come up close and personal to the vessel!

The season is set to peak over the next few weeks, as the last of the pregnant adult humpbacks make their way north to the warmer waters in the Great Barrier Reef to give birth to their calves. Other proud new humpback parents are already turning round to make their way back down to the frosty waters in Antarctica that they call home, there isn’t a better time to get out on the water and see these magnificent mammals for yourself.

With the first juveniles of the season already spotted, and many more juveniles travelling back south alongside their parents, it means that more ocean action is guaranteed in Moreton Bay in the coming weeks and months before they arrive back home.

There has never been a better time to come whale watching with guaranteed sightings and new humpback calves leaping their way through the bay.
