Moreton Islands Big Sandhills & Little Sandhills
These sand hills are all amazing because they a free from vegetation. The wind shaped dunes of the Big Sandhills rise up to 60 metres above their base. Along with the Little Sandhills and The Desert, the Big Sandhills are the only unstabilised dunes on the island – everything else is covered and supported by vegetation which prevents erosion.
Below the Big Sandhills, Moreton Island is scattered with sandy flats with sea grasses which can only be accessed at low tide. It is at this time that the area comes alive with worms, mollusks and literally thousands of soldier crabs.
The Little Sandhills are accessible from the eastern surf beach, whereas the Big Sandhills are directly accessible from the western beach.
