24th - 30th August 2018 Whale Watching

We have had a very strong finish to the month of August, we were fortunate enough to see 50 Humpback Whales this week and even 2 elusive Southern Right Whales. Although our numbers were not as high as the previous weeks, the quality of the experience is constantly improving!

We have a very passionate team at Tangalooma always sharing information and reported sightings between tours, whether you are whale watching from the land, air or sea. We were absolutely ecstatic to hear from the Cape Moreton whale watch tour, looking out from the headland that they spotted a mother and calf Southern Right Whale resting and nursing in the shallow clear waters close to the island.

Unfortunately the Southern Right Whale was the first whale species to be exploited by whaling in Australia.   They were named the “right” whale as they were the right ones to hunt as they were slow moving, floated when deceased and had a high oil yield. It is estimated there are only 10,000 of these magnificent creatures left in the wild, so each sighting is extremely rare.

The winter weather has been very forgiving, with moderate breezes experienced at Tangalooma, the weather may not be heating up just yet but the whale watching sure is! We have had whales as far south as the Tangalooma shipwrecks!

The beautiful waters surrounding North Point have also been incredibly productive this week with turtles, hammerhead sharks and dolphins all sighted.  We were also very lucky to witness what looked like interspecies communication when a pod of 60 dolphins were weaving in and around the humpback whales.   It’s amazing to think what these intelligent animals due with such a large brain.

Every day out on the whale watch is just so different we never really know what to expect, but don’t take my word for it, find out how incredible these creatures are and come join us for a Whale Watching Cruise at Tangalooma!
