On the last Saturday of June, the eastern beaches of Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) were buzzing with energy and purpose as volunteers from Sea Shepherd Australia, Tangalooma Island Resort, and the wider community came together for a day dedicated to protecting our ocean. The clean-up formed part of Sea Shepherd’s #StemTheTide campaign, a movement focused on defending marine life and keeping our oceans free from plastic pollution.
Kicking off from the Tangalooma Eco Centre, the day began with a warm welcome and safety briefing before participants set off to tackle marine debris along Moreton Island’s stunning but often impacted eastern shoreline. Armed with gloves, bags, and plenty of enthusiasm, volunteers fanned out across the coast, collecting rubbish washed ashore and hidden amongst dunes; everything from plastic bottles and discarded fishing gear to toothbrushes and old ropes.
This clean-up marked yet another chapter in a long-standing partnership between Sea Shepherd Australia and Tangalooma Island Resort, which began in 2019. Together, the two organisations have been working to reduce marine pollution on Moreton Island, a treasured part of Queensland’s natural heritage and a haven for wildlife.
Morgan, Sea Shepherd Australia’s Brisbane chapter coordinator, thanked the volunteers for their incredible efforts in collecting 242 kilograms of rubbish on the day, highlighting how community-led action plays a critical role in restoring and protecting fragile coastal ecosystems. The collective impact of these events has been significant over the years, not just in the amount of rubbish removed, but in raising awareness of the challenges our oceans face.
Throughout the day, volunteers connected with the Sea Shepherd team, gaining insight into their conservation work and the broader impact of global marine protection efforts. As bags of collected debris piled up, the waste was removed from the shoreline and set aside for proper disposal. Each item cleared from the coast marked a small but important step in protecting marine ecosystems for generations to come.
Tangalooma Island Resort is proud to stand alongside Sea Shepherd Australia in supporting meaningful, action-driven environmental efforts like this. Together, we’re not just cleaning beaches, we’re helping protect ocean life and inspire future generations of guardians for the ocean.
