Lazy whales rolling over on a Sunday!
The whales took into consideration that it was a Sunday today, as they seemed very relaxed and repeatedly rolled over on the water's surface. Guests were lucky to see 7 Humpback whales today, including 5 adults and 2 juveniles. We saw some spectacular behaviours including impressive breaches, tail throws and pec slaps!
As we observed the whales rolling over, we got to have a great look at the different colourations on their bodies. Humpback whales have a special colour adaptation called 'counter shading', whereby their backsides are dark grey and their undersides are white. This provides them with effective camouflage from their predators Killer whales, as the different shadings help them blend into the surrounding environment while underwater.
We've had a spectacular day out on the whale watch cruise today, and cannot wait for these beautiful mammals to migrate back south to Antarctica in the next month!
