Tangalooma gets the tick from EarthCheck

Tangalooma Island Resort has recently achieved Certified Silver status through EarthCheck, the world's leading environmental management and professional services group for the travel and tourism industry.

The certification has come after months of dedicated analysis from the resort’s in-house Green Team, a group of hand-picked resort staff committed to limiting the impact resort operations have on the environment.

Tangalooma Island Resort Environmental Manager, Penny Limbach said that the Green Team has played a vital role in identifying the strategic priorities of the resort to achieve EarthCheck’s Silver accreditation.

"Our passionate Green Team have been instrumental in helping us reach this great milestone."

"From developing policies and refining processes and procedures, to reducing the resort’s carbon footprint, we have been able to identify where our strengths and weaknesses lay, and implement an action plan to ensure best out comes for the environment, and our community" Ms Limbach said.

This achievement further reinforces the resort’s positioning as a leader in eco-tourism experiences.

Resort Director David James said the recent Silver accreditation is reflective of the resorts ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, working towards Gold certification within the next 5 years.

"The Tangalooma board has made a very conscious decision to improve benchmarking and reporting around our carbon footprint, and our current benchmark further substantiates how seriously we are taking this initiative."

"Our aim is to position Tangalooma Island Resort as one of Australia’s most environmentally sustainable resort within the next 10-15 years," Mr James said.

Tourism is a $1.4 trillion industry which directly affects the destinations it operators within. The very environmental values and cultural assets that attract visitors to destinations need to be protected and responsibly managed. The tourism industry and its operators are key to creating this change.

Stewart Moore, CEO of EarthCheck, said that Tangalooma Island Resort has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability.

"I would like to congratulate the whole team at Tangalooma Island Resort on their achievement. They are a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference," Mr Moore said.

By working with EarthCheck, Tangalooma Island Resort has joined other industry leaders in taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face our planet.
