Best ways to experience the iconic Tangalooma Wrecks

Located just north of Tangalooma Island Resort are the Tangalooma Wrecks, a cluster of 15 ships scuttled by the Queensland Government to provide safe anchorage for recreational boats. Coral has now formed around the Wrecks creating an artificial reef, providing a safe haven for over 200 species of fish, turtles, wobbegongs and dugongs. Here our top four ways to experience the best of this iconic landmark:

Snorkelling the Tangalooma Wrecks

Snorkel (Minimum 6 years old)

Dive in and get up close and personal with an abundance of marine life in the crystal clear turquoise water.  Keep your eyes peeled for luminescent moon wrasse, parrotfish, striped sergeant majors, kingfish, cod and grouper.

Our Wrecks Snorkel Tour takes you from the Resort to the Wrecks so there is no need to battle the currents and swim there yourself. Our tour includes a guide and all snorkel equipment including wetsuits, fins, mask, snorkel, life jacket and pool noodle for those who want the extra buoyancy.

Kayaking (Minimum 8 years old)

If you aren’t a big swimmer, kayaking around the wrecks is the way to go. Our transparent kayaks allow you to discover the diverse local marine life without getting wet. Feeling adventurous? Try the night kayaking tour where you can watch the sun set over the Glass House Mountains in the distance as your kayak illuminates to reveal a unique view of the ocean’s nightlife.

Tangalooma Sea Scooter Underwater

Sea Scooter (Minimum 8 years old)

For an unforgettable experience, try a sea scooter! The user-friendly machine propels you through the water with ease, giving you an extra speed boost. Travel further and navigate the current around the wrecks while you duck dive and barrel roll through the water. Keep your eyes on the lookout for wobbegongs camouflaged in the underwater shadows. Anyone can have a go with adult and children’s sizes available.

Helicopter

Arguably the best view of the Wrecks, our scenic helicopter flights give you a bird’s eye view of both the beautiful Wrecks and other gorgeous parts of Moreton Island.  A flight provides a unique perspective not everyone is lucky enough to enjoy. If you’re looking to spoil or surprise a special someone, we also provide flights to Tangalooma from Brisbane.
