By Tangalooma Island Resort
An Eco Ranger's job is never dull! In a month full of wildlife rescues, the team at the Tangalooma Eco Centre recently stepped in to assist a turtle which arrived needing urgent care. The male turtle had presented with his front left flipper missing - and while the team is not sure how this has happened, it is unfortunately most likely due to a boat strike or fishing line entanglement.
Turtles can often out live humans, and from initial observations this turtle is estimated to be between 80-100 years old. The turtle was so heavy he needed 4 adult males to carry him to safety, with the team even needing additional assistance from some of the Quad Bike drivers!
Following an initial assessment, the team quickly arranged to send him off the island on the first available boat back to the mainland, where Marine Parks were able to collect him and take him to receive the full veterinary care he needs before hopefully being returned back to his home in Moreton Bay soon. Get well soon Mr Turtle and another timely reminder of the vulnerability of the local animals passing our shores.
