On Thursday, 30 October, David van Westrop, a passionate member of the Tangalooma Island Resort staff, will embark on an extraordinary challenge of running an 87 kilometre lap around the entire coastline of Moreton Island. But this isn’t just a test of endurance. David is lacing up his running shoes to raise funds and awareness for the EcoMarines Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to protecting South East Queensland’s waterways and marine ecosystems.
Starting and finishing at Tangalooma Island Resort, David’s solo run will trace the island’s perimeter, weaving through sandy beaches, rugged bush trails and spectacular coastal scenery. It’s a route few have attempted on foot, let alone in a single day. With only his running gear and a deep commitment to environmental protection, David is turning one of Queensland’s most beautiful islands into a racetrack for change.
"I wanted the future generations to be able to enjoy this environment just as much as I am right now."
The funds raised from David’s journey will directly support the EcoMarines’ mission: educating and engaging schools, communities and businesses in hands-on environmental initiatives. By inspiring the next generation of eco-leaders, the EcoMarines are building a sustainable future, one school and one student at a time. Their innovative programs connect young people with the natural world and foster a culture of stewardship and respect for our precious marine habitats.
For David, who lives and works in the heart of this natural paradise, the cause couldn’t be closer to home. “Moreton island is absolutely beautiful, and I wanted the future generations to be able to enjoy this environment just as much as I am right now. Our ecosystems are being tested more than ever, which is why I have decided to take on this massive challenge and raise awareness and money for the EcoMarines Foundation, a non-profit that provides free environmental education to schools across Queensland."
Whether you’re a nature lover, a runner, or someone who believes in the power of community-driven change, you can support David’s run by donating to his GoFundMe, where funds will go directly to the EcoMarines. Take action today and help protect our environment for the generations of tomorrow!
