Denise and Dennis: A diamond anniversary at Tangalooma

There are few stories as heartwarming as that of Denise and Dennis Overton, a couple whose journey together began in the most enchanting way: at Tangalooma Island Resort. This August 2025, they returned to the island to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, a milestone that speaks volumes about their enduring love and shared adventures.

A meeting made in paradise

Their story began in 1964 when Denise, then 16, was on holiday with her family at Tangalooma, a trip that involved her very first flight from Sydney to Brisbane. Dennis, a 20-year-old adventurer, was holidaying alone on the island. The pair met amidst the island’s stunning beaches and sparkling waters, an encounter that changed their lives forever.

Following their holiday, Dennis made a bold move and visited Denise at her home in Penshurst, Sydney. A year later, they married in 1965, making Tangalooma the backdrop not only for their first meeting but also for their honeymoon.

A growing family and lifelong memories

Denise and Dennis’ family blossomed quickly, with four children born by the time Denise was just 22: Jenny, Geoff, Andrew, and Debbie. Today, they have eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, a testament to the love and care they have poured into their family over six decades.

Their family shares a deep sense of adventure and a passion for travel, traits no doubt inspired by their early experiences together. Though they live in New South Wales, the Overtons hold Tangalooma close to their hearts, returning for a holiday in the 1990s and now back once again to celebrate their diamond anniversary.

Celebrating 60 years of love

Their return to the island last month was not just a holiday but a celebration of a lifetime together. At Tangalooma, we love love, and to help make the occasion unforgettable, our staff welcomed them warmly with wine, chocolate, freshly picked poppies and a special dining experience.

Dennis fondly recalls their favourite memory from their honeymoon: exploring the island in an old army vehicle, experiencing both land and sea adventures. For Denise and Dennis, this shared spirit of discovery has been a cornerstone of their marriage.

When asked about the secret to their enduring relationship, Dennis offers simple but profound advice: “To care and share with each other.” This commitment to mutual support mirrors the long marriages of their own parents and has clearly stood the test of time.

A legacy of love and adventure

Denise and Dennis Overton’s story is a beautiful reminder of the magic that can happen when love and adventure come together. Their 60th anniversary celebration at Tangalooma Island Resort not only honours their past but also inspires future generations to cherish their own journeys.

As they look ahead, the couple remains grateful for the memories made at the place where it all began and excited for the adventures yet to come.
