Turning scraps into sustainability at Tangalooma Island Resort

Sustainability plays an important role at Tangalooma Island Resort. One exciting initiative is our very own Worm Hotel. These little wrigglers help us to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich compost for our gardens. Worm Hotel Manager Nathan reports that the worms have already processed 22.24 cubic metres of food scraps this year, turning what would have been waste into garden gold.

The Worm Hotel is part of a broader program aimed at reducing waste, encouraging responsible practices and supporting conservation efforts. By transforming food scraps into compost, we can naturally enrich our gardens while keeping organic waste out of landfill. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefits the local environment.

As an EarthCheck Gold Certified resort, Tangalooma Island Resort meets high global standards for environmental management and sustainable operations. The Worm Hotel is one of many projects that contribute to our certification, showing how small actions can make a meaningful difference. Initiatives like this help us support local ecosystems and inspire environmentally conscious practices. It’s another step on our journey towards Platinum certification with EarthCheck in 2027 as we continue refining our waste practices, reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the island’s natural ecosystem.
