Did you know that the largest community-driven shellfish reef restoration project in Australia is taking place right here in Moreton Bay? The Central Moreton Bay OzFish Chapter has set an ambitious goal to restore 100 hectares of shellfish reefs over the next decade and beyond. This restoration initiative will not only enhance water quality but also revitalise aquatic life, support marine biodiversity, and improve both fishing conditions and seagrass habitats.
OzFish partnered with Tangalooma Island Resort to deploy oyster baskets in Moreton Bay, furthering Tangalooma’s ongoing commitment to the conservation of our precious aquatic environments.
A key element of this restoration is the establishment of the Moreton Bay Shellfish Recycling Centre. Used oyster shells, collected from seafood businesses and restaurants across Brisbane, play a crucial role in the restoration process. Research has shown that these shells provide the perfect foundation for live oysters to naturally re-establish themselves, helping to regenerate the reefs.
It was a fantastic day out on the barge, cruising through Moreton Bay and deploying the oyster baskets. Tangalooma Island Resort is proud to be part of this incredible project, one that will ensure Moreton Bay continues to thrive for generations to come!
