Flensing Deck Precinct

Important update regarding the Flensing Deck precinct at Tangalooma Island Resort

At Tangalooma Island Resort, we are committed to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all our guests and staff. After careful consideration and expert assessments, we have made the decision to refresh the area where the historic Flensing Deck (old Whaling Station) is currently situated. This decision has been made proactively, as recent engineering reports have indicated that the structure is nearing the end of its serviceable life and could present safety concerns in the future.

Tangalooma Island Resort has long envisioned enhancing this key precinct, guided by a Brisbane City Council approved masterplan for new event spaces, conference facilities, and guest amenities. While we hoped to integrate the original Flensing Deck structure, structural assessments have unfortunately shown its deteriorating condition making this unfeasible.

Therefore, with the full approval of the Brisbane City Council, we have been undertaking the careful removal of the existing Flensing Deck structure. This essential work is the first step towards realising a renewed future for this area.

This presents a wonderful opportunity to reinvigorate this central part of our resort. We are now eagerly embarking on the planning phase for contemporary, purpose-built event, conference, and guest facilities. These new additions are being designed to significantly elevate your experience with us, and we will look to weave the rich narrative of the site's whaling station history into the architecture and ambiance of the new precinct

Following the removal of the Flensing Deck, the area will be transformed into a temporary open green space for our guests to enjoy, providing a pleasant recreational area until such time as we can commence the new building project.

Project timeline and working hours:

  • We have completed the noisy demolition and removal works. The area where the deck was located is now awaiting final drainage and landscaping works, and is still restricted from public access until such works are completed.

  • During these times guest may experience intermittent noise from the machinery involved in the remediation works.

  • The timings and dates above are provided in good faith and are subject to additional changes. Any updates to this project schedule will be published here and all guests are advised to check this page regularly to stay abreast of all project updates.

Minimising guest disruption:

We understand these works may cause some inconvenience and sincerely apologise for any disruption. We are taking steps to minimise guest impact, including relocating those in the nearest rooms and having scheduled the project for one of our quieter winter periods.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we undertake this important project to ensure the long-term safety and enhancement of Tangalooma Island Resort. We are enthusiastic about the future improvements this will bring to our valued guests.

Should you have any immediate questions during your stay, our reception and frontline staff will be equipped to provide further information.

Sincerely
Resort Management
