Impressive Whales

The weather was conducive to an amazing whale watch today, guests sailed out of the bay on the Tangalooma Jet almost looking at their reflections in the water as we followed an adult Humpback whale at sea. He wasn’t in a hurry , just meandering along with not a care in the world and is one of the last few whales still migrating in a Northward direction. Most of the whale population are now starting to head home, back down South to their feeding grounds in the Antarctic.

All of the guests on board the boat were in awe of the sheer size of this majestic  creature who was travelling very closely by the side of the boat, suddenly after a shouts from excited guests, we spotted another big splash on the horizon.

As we headed over in that direction, another adult whale started putting on a show by propelling his humongous body out of the water , spinning in the air, then re entering the water with a huge boom and splash with water going everywhere. He then rolled on his back and started to carelessly slap the surface of the water with his large pectoral flippers, which was very impressive as he appeared again not to have any problems with just floating in the water looking at us.

Pectoral flippers are 1/3 of the body length of the whale and are used for steering, stopping and in this case doing a lot of splashing. Pectoral slaps are a form of communication amongst whales.

What a whale of a day, looking at a huge creature just off the boat showing us lots of behaviours to the huge applause of all of the guests on board the Tangalooma Jet who all had great views of these magnificent behaviours in an almost up close and personal private show. What an impressive whale he was.
