Tranquil Tuesday's

An incredible day was had by all on board the Tangalooma Whale Watch. Today we spotted 5 whales, totally at ease in their serene environment of Moreton Bay. We started the afternoon by cruising through the pristine surrounds inhaling the breathtaking views of Moreton Island, when we noticed a slow break in the glassy surface of the water alongside the vessel. The distinct humpback whale had made the first appearance of the day, much to the delight of the gasping onlookers onboard who stood just a few meters away. The large female was mesmerising as she coasted gracefully alongside the vessel, allowing all of her onlookers on board to absorb the raw magnitude of her size. As she continued on her journey we slowly parted ways.

Our peaceful afternoon continued as we cruised through the bay, soon we were joined by a mother and her playful juvenile who was extending his pectoral fin into the air to greet all onboard. After the young whale had exerted himself slapping his pectoral fin several times, he decided that alongside the boat was a prime spot for his afternoon nap. Everyone was in disbelief that we could be so fortunate to witness nature in the most pure form, a young whale and his mother sleeping as the afternoon sun washed over their backs along with the gentle waves of the bay. It was incredible to see how the whales can sleep so effectively under the surface of the water; they can do this because their bodies are extremely well adapted to store oxygen. They can access 90% of their lung capacity which is incredible in comparison to humans, who can only access 17%. This allows them to transfer blood to vital organs and stay beneath the surface significantly longer than most animals. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds!

Today we sighted 3 adult whales and 2 juveniles.
