A Sandy Surprise at Tangalooma!

The 2025 whale watching season has officially launched at Tangalooma Island Resort, and guests were welcomed with a special surprise on the beach.

To mark the start of the season, local sand artist Owen Cavanagh created an expansive whale-inspired sand art installation on the shores of Tangalooma. Set beside the iconic Leaning Palm, the star of the day was a beautiful humpback whale surrounded by delicate patterns, which quickly became a point of interest for passing guests.

The creation was filmed from above by drone pilot and videographer Geoff Aquino, whose footage captured the peaceful beauty of the artwork in its natural setting, a perfect match for the crystal-clear waters and blue skies of Moreton Bay.

While the sand art was temporary, it created a real talking point among visitors and helped build anticipation for the season ahead. It was a relaxed and thoughtful way to celebrate the incredible journey of the humpback whales and a reminder of how lucky we are at Tangalooma to be perfectly positioned along the Humpback Highway, with marine life passing just beyond the shoreline.

“We’re thrilled to welcome back the whales for another incredible season,” said Sue Hassard, Eco Centre Manager at Tangalooma. “Every year the numbers are increasing — last year we recorded a record 1,342 whales migrating along our coastline, which is a fantastic sign for the health of this iconic species.”

Guests aboard the whale watching cruises from June to October can expect to see everything from powerful breaches to playful tail slaps, and sometimes even mothers with calves cruising through the bay. The resort’s purpose-built vessels offer great views and a comfortable ride, with knowledgeable guides on board to share insights into whale behaviour and the broader marine ecosystem.
