Sand, Surf, and Storytelling: The Art of Owen Cavanagh

Owen Cavanagh is a renowned Sunshine Coast artist celebrated for his unique blend of surf culture and community engagement. Operating out of his studio in Coolum Beach, Owen has become a prominent figure in the local art scene, known for his large-scale murals and intricate sand art installations.

His artistic journey has been shaped by extensive travel, including time spent in Hawaii, where he met surf mural artist Wyland. This encounter inspired Owen to explore the potential of his work with airbrush art, leading to the creation of iconic pieces that capture the essence of coastal life. His signature surf art murals can be found worldwide, from the famous wave mural on the Sunshine Motorway to a beach bar in Rome, Italy.

In addition to his mural work, Owen has embraced sand art as a powerful medium to connect with others. He believes that creating art in public spaces opens up conversations, sparks curiosity, and brings people together. Sand art in particular invites shared moments between strangers, whether they’re passing by or stopping to watch the work unfold. Its impermanence makes it even more special — a fleeting celebration of creativity and community. Owen has also used this art form to support meaningful causes, including RUOK? Day, where his sand murals have helped raise awareness around mental health and the importance of checking in on others. Each piece, whether permanent or temporary, carries a sense of place, purpose, and positivity.

To mark the beginning of the 2025 whale watching season, we were thrilled to welcome Owen to Tangalooma Island Resort for a special collaboration. He crafted an expansive whale-themed sand art installation along our beautiful beachfront, right beside the iconic Leaning Palm. The installation became a talking point throughout the day, creating a shared moment of appreciation for both art and the ocean. Captured from above by highly acclaimed drone pilot Geoff Aquino, the artwork highlighted the natural beauty of Moreton Bay and the wonder of the humpback migration.

Through his diverse artistic pursuits, Owen Cavanagh continues to make a lasting impact on the Sunshine Coast and beyond. His work captures the spirit of the ocean and the heart of the community, proving that art can be more than something to look at — it can be something that brings people together.
