Recapping the 2021 Whale Watching Season

With the 2021 Tangalooma Whale Watching season racing to its conclusion, we're recapping our highlights of the season so far.

The 'Humpback Highway' just off the coast of Moreton Island has well and truly opened, with hundreds of humpback whales spotted on our cruises, all ready to show off to our guests with their various mesmerising whale behaviours.

One of the most memorable cruises this year involved the boat being suddenly approached by a pod of 9 curious whales, who swam right up to the vessel to explore. Besides the fact that Humpbacks usually only travel in pods of 2 or 3, what made this encounter extra special was the presence of a baby calf with them. We usually see calves towards the very back end of the whale watching season, when they begin their journey south back to Antarctica. Over the coming weeks we expect to spot an increased number of calves, and we can't wait to see these baby whales at play!

This season has also brought us a number of double breaches, which have been incredible to witness. A double breach is the breaching of two whales at the same time - which makes for a spectacular photograph! One of the reasons a double breach may occur is communication between the whales, as they make noise between one another by slapping or breaching the surface.

Our guests have also been treated to several other marine life encounters, including bottlenose, common, and indo pacific humpback dolphins, dugongs and even other whale species! We were treated to appearances by both minke and pilot (false killer) whales which was a real treat for our guests!

Tangalooma invites you to come and see not only the whales, but also the beautiful scenery of Moreton Island on our whale watching cruises. We're expecting a very strong finish to the 2021 Whale Watching season, so make sure you don't miss out and book on to a cruise today!
