46 Wildlife Rescues on Moreton Island 2024

Tangalooma is very fortunate to experience an abundance of native wildlife right on its doorstep. The Tangalooma Eco Centre not only runs our daily dolphin feeding program, but they also assist National Parks in the rescue of wildlife found on Moreton Island and surrounds.

In 2024, The Tangalooma Eco Centre assisted in a total of 46 rescues, and whilst not every rescue is successful due to the nature of the injury, there have been fantastic and rewarding releases. The 46 rescues included 10 green sea turtles, several sugar gliders, a carpet python and a variety of birds suffering injuries caused by fishing hooks or other wildlife.

In some circumstances, an animal must be kept in care until they are healthy enough to be released. A green sea turtle was found at Tangalooma Point, by island guests, that had its flipper cut and wrapped around rope from a crab pot. Our Eco Centre team promptly contacted the Marine Parks for assistance, who then sent the sea turtle to Australia Zoo for care. The turtle’s flipper was amputated and will be released back into the wild once rehabilitated.

If you would like to learn more about the incredible wildlife you see on and around the island, and the endangered species that pass our shores daily, feel free to pop in at any time to chat to the Eco Rangers in the Tangalooma Eco Centre.
