On 16 May, the shores of Tangalooma Island Resort were overrun by the jolliest crew of all – pirates with a purpose! In partnership with The Kids’ Cancer Project, we proudly hosted Pirate Day, raising a chest full of treasure (aka vital research funds) for childhood brain cancer – a cause especially close to the heart of our own Hotel Manager.
This swashbuckling celebration falls during May, which is Childhood Brain Cancer Awareness Month, making it a powerful time to rally support, raise awareness, and fund the fight against one of the most devastating illnesses affecting children.

We were honoured to welcome Tiana, an incredible childhood cancer survivor and now a dedicated team member at The Kids’ Cancer Project. Tiana and her mum joined us for the festivities, bringing both inspiration and warmth to the day. Her presence was a reminder of the resilience and strength behind every story of survival, and why continued funding for research is so vital. We were overjoyed to see so many staff, both at the island and head office, dressed up and getting involved!
Joining the crew was none other than Orlando Pirate Bear, a beloved mascot with more than just charm and eye patches. Orlando represents The Kids’ Cancer Project Bear Program, which since 2009 has provided cuddly companions to children undergoing cancer treatment in hospitals. These bears are more than toys, they’re loyal friends offering comfort in an often frightening time, reminding kids they’re never alone on their journey.
Our pirate crew, led by Orlando Pirate Bear, set off on grand adventures across the island, like conquering the quad bike trails, cruising the coastline on segways, and even soaring above the iconic Tangalooma Wrecks for a bird’s-eye view of the bay. All in the name of fun, community, and making a difference.
The origins of Pirate Day are as heartfelt as they are heroic. The event was founded by Nathan Colgan, whose son Conor was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Doctors told Nathan that research was the only way to find a cure – a message that sparked a mission. In 2014, Conor’s school hosted the first Pirate Day, inspired by his need to wear an eye patch due to treatment. The response was overwhelming, and what started as one boy’s brave idea has since grown into a national movement helping kids like him across Australia.
At Tangalooma, we’re proud to be part of this legacy. Pirate Day reminds us that anyone can join the fight against childhood brain cancer – no cutlass required. Just a generous heart and the will to help. We’re proud to say we’ve hit our $2,500 fundraising goal! But the adventure’s not over yet, me hearties! Let’s ride this wave and raise even more as every dollar helps fund life-saving research and brings us one step closer to a cure. Together, we can turn awareness into action and give hope to children and families who need it most.
