Assisted Wildlife Rescues – Sunny’s Story

Tangalooma is privileged to operate in an environment rich with diverse wildlife. While many animals thrive in their natural habitat, there are times when they become injured or distressed and require a helping hand.

Our dedicated team of Eco Rangers are qualified to assist Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) to help care for and facilitate the safe transfer of injured animals to specialised wildlife organisations that are equipped to provide ongoing veterinary care and rehabilitation.

So far in 2026, our Eco Rangers have assisted with a number of wildlife rescues. From sea turtles and birds to native mammals, each rescue highlights just how vulnerable our wildlife can be.

Earlier this year, an adventurous sugar glider unexpectedly hopped aboard a boat docked in Brisbane, going unnoticed until the owners had already left the area. Thankfully, the little traveller was safely transferred to the care of our Eco Rangers where it was closely monitored overnight. The sugar glider was then returned to its original habitat back in Brisbane and released by Wildlife Rescue Queensland. It was a very happy ending for the little guy, who was named Sunny.

Another recent assisted rescue involved a whistling kite with a severe fishing line entangled around its leg. Discovered by National Parks, the bird was suffering a severe necrotic leg, confirmed to be likely caused by fishing line. The animal was successfully transported to Australia Zoo where it received the necessary veterinary care. This heartbreaking encounter is another reminder of the critical importance of discarding fishing gear correctly, and the growing concern for pollution in our marine environment.

If you notice an injured animal, please alert our Eco Rangers, who are based at the Eco Centre near the Jetty (or notify the closest Tangalooma staff member who can contact the Eco Centre on your behalf). Our devoted team of Eco Rangers will contact the appropriate authorities and coordinate the best assistance strategy to aid the injured animal and ensure it receives the care it needs.
