Start the day off right with a bush walk in the incredible Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park (check the website for track conditions before setting off). Along this route, you can expect to see untouched rainforest and bird life, with a backdrop of views over the Tangalooma Wrecks and Moreton Bay. This walk has stairs and is sandy underfoot so not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. The trail winds up and down gently and has 308 stairs to go down at the end to reach the beach. Head out early to stretch your legs before a day of adventure on the water, or set off in the afternoon to see one of the amazing Moreton Island sunsets from up high.
Starting at the Ticket Booth near the jetty, turn your back to the ocean and walk slightly uphill between the buildings.
Go up the access road between the yellow bollards. Where the road is painted red, turn left.
Keep going left along the road until you see two signs up the hill slightly on your right for bushwalking and the Desert Track. Take the wooden steps to follow the path.
When you come to the 4WD track, turn left and follow the small footpath along the edge of the track. You will reach a set of steps on the right-hand side of the road with a sign saying “The Desert Walking Track”. Walk up the steps (crossing carefully because vehicles use this road).
Follow the track through the shady forest, and when you get to the next trail marker to go right at the top of the steps.
When you reach the T-junction, go left and follow the sign to “Tangalooma via beach”. You can do an 800m return detour at this point by going right to see the Tangalooma Desert.
Walk down the 308 steps to the beach.
Turn right once you reach the beach and walk along the sand with the ocean on your left until you reach the resort.
