Floppy fins!

Today we were lucky enough to see a very young calf that was most likely only days old. He was still grey and his dorsal fin was still floppy. Having a floppy dorsal fin allows the whale to be born much easier. He was travelling with his mother and another large humpback whale.

The little calf was making their long migration take even longer, leading his mum in all directions just off the north end of Moreton Island. The mother eventually got him in line and they continued North on their migration. These whales would be some of the last stragglers heading North, and we are hoping to see over the next few weeks the mothers start returning South with their newborn calves.
