Lazy Loggers

A wet and wonderful day here on Moreton Island with 8 Humpback whale sightings today, including 3 little calves. The grey skies made it a little tricky to spot the whale’s blow (that’s the condensation cloud caused by the whale’s warm exhale and water running across the back.) The mother and calf pairs were a little tricky to see at first after making long dives but agreed to cooperate in the end.

We witnessed a mother with an open wound about 2-3 feet in length and another 2 separate whales were spotted with open injuries. Each one was slightly different and you can tell the difference in the photo's above. We can only speculate what would have caused such an injury, but it’s possible that courtship between whales or a boat strike could be the reason.

We have just one more day of an incredible whale watching season to go! Stay tuned to find out our final whale sighting update!!!
